Poem of the Week: Surfacing

I mostly post my poetry first on Instagram, (unless it is a patron-exclusive poem).
Each Sunday, here on the blog I post the poem that has got the most Insta likes.
If you’re on Instagram, let’s follow each other. You’ll find my account Orna Ross.poetry here. And now for the poem.

This week's poem is the final stanza from “Surfacing”

Down by that river bank I weep
for how we went off course:
those harsh, embittered words you said
the love they slapped to loss.
And my strange need to dive too deep,
the blood and breath I gave
to trying to buoy up a life
that was not mine to save.
