AI Policy

My books are written by me. The prose, characters, plots, and ideas that make up my creative work are mine, shaped by years of work and informed by my life and reading.

I use AI tools for certain processes in my writing and publishing. These currently include: using AI to help brainstorm story and poetry ideas, marketing angles, and publishing strategies; using AI to generate draft material from ideas I have prompted, which I then substantially revise, expand, and shape into finished work; using AI-powered editing tools; using AI to draft early versions of book descriptions, press releases and other marketing materials; and using AI tools in marketing and book promotion.

I never use AI to generate any content I haven't reviewed, revised, edited and approved. I take full responsibility for all content I publish. I do not publish AI-generated factual claims without independent verification.

My Uses of AI

Design

AI assists my thinking; it doesn't make my covers. My book covers are created by human designers, some of whom use AI powered tools. I use AI tools during the ideation phase—exploring mood, palette, composition, and reference imagery—but the final design is always produced and passed by me and a human professional. My acknowledgements credit human designers.

Marketing

My newsletters and online posts are written by me. I sometimes use AI tools to help me brainstorm ideas, suggest subject lines, or draft early versions of promotional copy — but I rewrite these substantially before they go out, and my readers are hearing from me, with some behind-the-scenes assistance.

Audio

My audiobooks are narrated by a human narrator. I have not used AI-generation or AI-synthesized narration in any of my audio productions.

I recognize that AI is a contested area, and I treat readers and writers who feel differently about AI with acceptance and respect. My AI policy is not an argument — it is a transparency statement. I will revisit this policy as needed and update if my practice changes.
