Campaign Set to Launch to Build Maud Gonne Statue in Dublin
A campaign has been launched aiming to honour Maud Gonne, an iconic figure in Irish history, with a public statue.
The initiative has been set up following a gathering of readers, writers, artists, and historians, promising to commemorate Gonne's contributions through significant public artwork.
Led by novelist and poet Orna Ross, founder of the Alliance of Independent Authors, the campaign is supported by a dedicated “uncommittee” of creative and scholarly supporters and backed by Gonne's descendants. Maud Gonne, famously known as the muse of WB Yeats, was also a revolutionary activist who championed Irish independence, women's rights, and the rights of prisoners and workers.

ALLi Director, Orna Ross, Named Thought Leader in Independent Publishing
Well in my own industry (independent publishing) I would say that the founder of the Alliance for Independent Authors, Orna Ross, has been a really significant thought leader when it comes to helping authors navigate the often tricky world of independent publishing. Her understanding of the issues and creating of tools/resources to help authors avoid pitfalls has been game changing for many people. I think what we can learn from her example is that one dedicated person can truly have an enormous impact on an industry, which is really what thought leadership is all about, right?

The great fiction of AI
AI writing has entered an uncanny valley between ordinary tool and autonomous storytelling machine. This ambiguity is part of what makes the current moment both exciting and unsettling.
“Using an AI writing tool is like having a crazy, off the wall, creative writing partner who throws out all sorts of suggestions, who never gets tired, who’s always there.” She wants it to stay “crazy” even if it means sorting through a fair amount of useless text. She likes that its hallucinatory weirdness sends her in unexpected directions, but it also reassures her that she’s the one guiding the story. Like any collaboration, working with AI brings with it both the possibility of creative frisson and new questions of influence and control…

Orna Ross Guest Judges BookLife Prize in Fiction
Mr Reed’s novel was selected as the general fiction finalist by guest judge Orna Ross, an author and the founder of the Alliance of Independent Authors, before finally being named the winner of the grand prize by Publisher’s Weekly.
According to Ross, the book “fulfills the expectations of its genre while offering an original approach to story. Through a variety of voices, each compelling and reverent, the story unfolds as a morality tale that deftly handles multiple settings, styles, and points of view. Fairy tales, biblical scenes and psalms, the stories of a loving mother, and the lonely journey of a mysterious old man all coalesce to create a tale that itself takes the ‘road less traveled’ it so vividly describes.”

Self Publishing Indie Author Spotlight: Orna Ross
Indie author Orna Ross inspired a self-publishing movement, but before that she spent 20 years working as a freelancer. Her work has appeared in The Irish Times, the University College Dublin, and many other journalism outlets. After publishing two novels with Penguin Ireland, Orna Ross began her journey as an independent self-publishing author.
She found success: hitting the best seller list on Kobo and Apple, climbing the charts on Amazon. Taken from her view as an indie author, she states, “I’m a proud indie author. Self-publishing has been the best move of my writing life, creatively and commercially.”

Balancing the Books: Is the Business of Writing Broken?
From London to Los Angeles, authors around the world have seen their average earnings plummet in recent years, despite book sales continuing to grow. Some industry experts say this trend is a serious threat to the future of modern literature. Attending the recent Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, Arabian Business spoke to some local authors and publishing insiders to find out if the business of books really is broken.
“The publishing industry has undergone – and continues to undergo – significant transformation at the hands of the joint forces of digital technology and the economy. Amazon is more friendly to independent authors than are traditional publishers: Amazon pays up to 70 percent royalty to the self-published author, while a trade publisher offers perhaps 10-15 percent. From this, indie authors will absorb their own editing, design, and production costs but it still leaves them with considerably more profit per title,” Orna Ross tells Arabian Business.

ALLi: Blockchain the Missing Link
The Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi) is exhibiting at LBF for the first time and has launched a white paper which claims that the development of blockchain technology could revolutionise the book industry.
ALLi’s study shows blockchain could create “a new ecosystem which places authors at the head of the payment chain” through direct tracking of intellectual property and monetary rights, leading to “true independence” for self-published writers. It would enable them to supply digital products direct to readers, and could bring an end to them “relying on a single outlet”, said ALLi director Orna Ross.

How To Publish Your Book with Blockchain and Crypto
Sukhi Jutla is a London-based entrepreneur with an exhausting list of activities and achievements to her name: co-founder of a platform for gold and diamond trading, writer and public speaker, winner of various awards for entrepreneurship and a qualified IBM Blockchain Foundation Developer.
A non-profit called the Alliance for Independent Authors wanted to discover how writers could leverage blockchain technology. Its founder, Orna Ross, contacted Sukhi having read her contribution to The Fintech Book.
At Orna’s request, Sukhi wrote a White Paper called Blockchain for Books, which grew into what she calls “a 10,000 word manifesto” for creating “an author-centric business model”. In the model, “all the payments and royalties are going directly to the author, and so we are essentially putting the publisher, who is the intermediary, out of business”.

THE BLOCKCHAIN – OPEN FOR BUSINESS
Jessica Faircliff, SA Booksellers
There are many that think the hype around the blockchain is a bubble that will burst, but it could have a profound effect on the publishing industry as a whole. The Alliance of Independent Authors, (ALLi) and licensing marketplace IPR License, are both taking it very seriously. In fact Alli has set up a committee and a campaign called the Blockchain for Books to investigate the opportunities and present a white paper of reccommendations. Led by Orna Ross, an Irish author, and the founder of ALLi who has been named one of the top 100 most influential people in publishing by The Bookseller, the white paper, when released should be of great interest to the global publishing industry.

ALLi initially covered Pronoun’s launch and subsequent acquisition by Macmillan with a mix of optimism and skepticism. ALLi founder, Orna Ross, and Author Enterprise Advisor, Joanna Penn, expressed concern about the (lack of a) visible business model.
Despite those early misgivings, Pronoun earned the approval of indie authors, including myself and fellow ALLi Watchdog Giacomo “Jim” Giammatteo, and ALLi decided to give the service the benefit of the doubt and observe closely what unfolded. So Monday’s sudden announcement of the closure of Pronoun was a shock and a disappointing end for a service that held such promise.

NOT SURE HOW TO PUBLISH YOUR BOOK?
Luke English Laceys Solicitors
Orna Ross, director of The Alliance of Independent Authors (Alli), says… Every author needs a good editor, which could come at a cost of £1,000. Add the cost of a designer for an eye-catching cover, and someone to oversee the marketing and she estimates that the total cost of a professionally produced book, either digital or on paper, could be between £2,500 and £5,000. There are self-publishing publishers that, for a fee, can assist you with this. You also need to decide whether to publish only e-books or include printed versions (hardback and softback editions) as there are cost implications to both.
