Poem of the Week: Soft Anger

I mostly post my poetry first on Instagram, (unless it is a patron-exclusive poem). Then, each Sunday here on the blog, I post the poem that has got the most Insta likes.

If you’re on Instagram, let’s follow each other. You’ll find my account Orna Ross.poetry here.

The poems are inspired by photographs, sometimes taken by me, sometimes by others.

My most popular poem on Instagram this week was “Soft Anger”.

And now for this week’s poem:

Soft Anger

Though I knew all you’d done
to us was wrong, all wrong,
I tried to quell my wrath.
I fumed and fretted,
stopped the words I feared
might issue forth.

And then I saw the face
of a powerful sea
which seemed to say:
“This is how it feels
when outrage has its day.
Let it be and then be
on its way”

So I released my roar
of pain, and let my fury rule,
till it blew round to me, showed
how I’d played the fool.

And now, more lightly held,
soft anger guides my way,
and has become my fuel.
