Poem of the Week: Our Bright Star

I mostly post my poetry first on Instagram, (unless it is a patron-exclusive poem). Then, each Sunday here on the blog, I post the poem that has got the most Insta likes.

If you’re on Instagram, let’s follow each other. You’ll find my account Orna Ross.poetry here.

The poems are inspired by photographs, sometimes taken by me, sometimes by others.

My most popular poem on Instagram this week was, “Our Bright Star”.

And now for this week’s poem:

Our Bright Star

O lady from clear realms afar
Dream-bright the light of your good will
A grail of light in us instil.
Pierce through our darkness, o bright star.

These days to teach the way we would,
we send out troops to foreign lands,
our youth in troops of comrade bands.
to sunder flesh and splatter blood.

Within us secret weapons rage
our children’s breath falls foul or ill
raised on the breath of those we kill,
and those whom we suppress or cage.

Dear bearer of the soft borne realm
Once more with kindness turn the till
with your kind eyes see through our shill
until we render up the helm.

O lady from clear world afar
Call forth the light of our good will
Your nascent light in us fulfil.
Dispel our darkness, o bright star.
